Dude-you’re getting a Dell! or a Dell employee at least…

Okay, so I’ve been pretty non-existent at this blog since I started my new job back in August. I know, slacker Lesley slacker!

So, what are you doing, you ask?  I work at the computer company Dell. As in, dude, you’re getting a Dell!  Do you remember that commercial? I digress…

Anyway, no I don’t sell computers, but I work for Dell’s Services division who does work in the healthcare industry. Basically, Dell has divisions of the company where they provide support for other businesses/organizations and the healthcare arena is one of them.  The team I am on provides support to a major network of hospitals in the US.

What is pretty cool about my team is we are all remote-we live in various parts of the US and all different time zones. I’ve never met any of my team in person-the closest I’ve come is skype-ing (is that a verb?) with one of them during my interview process. The main way we communicate with each other is through email, IM, and conference calls.

I love that the job is so 21st century, because I’ve always seen myself in that type of a role and I truly believe that is where the future of work is going. I will say however, that working at home is not the “dream job” that some people make it out to be.  Yes, it’s nice that you can work in your pajamas if you want to…but I still have to get dressed every morning as I take the kiddo to daycare.  Also, I work very set hours, so it’s not like I can take off in the middle of the day as most of my days are filled with meetings and being online at all times in case any urgent issues pop up. In fact, I would dare to say that I go out for lunch or am away from my desk much less now than any job I’ve had in the past. Go figure.

That’s kind of the bad part about working from home-I can see my desk from my living room. It’s very hard to have a “work” life and home life when you work out of your home-definitely something to consider if you are considering working from home. I highly recommend having an office or room dedicated to your work, and trying to shut the door and stay out of it when you’re off. Easier said than done. :)

Anyway, now you know what I’ve been up to and why I have been horribly neglecting my blog (and my twitter account)! I promise to try and do better in the future.

My week this week…
